Transformative Conversations

For consultants, mediators, coaches, and organizational leaders who want to have more positive influence with their conversations.
Transformative Conversations: Basic elements of conversations that solve or dissolve conflicts and influence for positive change. A highly participative workshop. Groups in conflict often focus on what divides them: their habitual ways of thinking, feeling, and communicating that keeps them fragmented. This workshop shows how to reach generative solutions by building awareness, collaboration, and consensus through the way we talk. Participants will learn how enlisting groups in transformative conversations can help them 1) move from politeness or breakdown to mutual inquiry, understanding, and creativity, 2) distinguish between the unintended causes of conflict that will dissipate with greater awareness, and the significant impasses whose solutions require a different way of thinking and acting to break through, and 3) find practical and creative solutions that lead to greater collaboration.

An Hour with Hans Boserup

For mediators and others interested in the range of activities of mediators.
Arguably the most experienced mediator in Europe, Hans Boserup is an extraordinary resource for fellow passengers aboard the Mediation-at-Sea cruise. His career experience includes: practising mediator, court annexed mediator, university teacher of mediation, researcher in mediation, author (Mediation: Six Ways in Seven Days), and mediation of every kind of conflict imaginable, such as peer mediation, victim-offender mediation, family mediation, corporate mediation, conflict in organisations (one case involved 350 parties), workplace mediation, and environmental mediation. He taught mediation in Afghanistan in 2007. As an attorney, he has been involved in more than 3500 cases in city courts, high courts, supreme court, and the international court of human rights. He can confidently answer any question in a meaningful way based on experience.

Great Leaders; Great Mediators

For consultants, mediators, and organizational leaders who want to improve their leadership skills or teach others how to improve theirs.
The hallmark of great leaders is the ability to effectively resolve conflicts within their organizations. New leaders may be daunted by these challenges, but can overcome them if given mediation tools. Leaders who use mediation can elevate their organizations to higher levels of performance. Great leaders empower their associates to become great mediators, helping them unlock the creative potential of their workgroups. Supported by a PowerPoint presentation.

Weaving Mediation into the Fabric of Organizations

For consultants, mediators, and others with an interest in workplace mediation and organizational culture. Track 1 (Train-the-Trainer) registrants of the Certification Conference are expected to attend, as they will be prepared to deliver this same presentation as an MTI Certified Trainer.
Provides a blueprint for the strategic management of organizational conflict. Makes a compelling business case for the prevention and early resolution of workplace conflict. Supported by an extensive PowerPoint presentation, available to participants on request.

The Myth of Moral Justice, based on a book by the same title (tentative)

For all who deal with the legal system, from the inside or out
The legal system is broken. Participants in the legal system overwhelmingly feel that their case was not resolved, that justice was not achieved and that is true whether or nor they won their case. One reason that the legal system engenders such dissatisfaction both for professionals and parties is that it is concerned with legally correct outcomes, not with moral outcomes or basic notions of right and wrong. Most lawyers have divorced themselves from the questions of what is right, what is just, what is true. They restrict their counseling to what is legally permissible. Mediation offers one avenue to achieving greater satisfaction in settling disputes in many cases.

For anyone who wants to understand how judges think, react, and decide.
Ever wonder what it's like to be a judge, but didn't know one to ask? Here's your chance to peek behind the robes of a judge who served many years in both the trial and appellate courts. This will be an informal discussion and Q&A session, not a formal presentation. Come with your questions and curiosities.

The Place of Mediation in Consolidating the Gains of Democracy (tentative)

Ever wondered where the United States would be without democracy? Ever wondered where democracy could be with mediation/alternative dispute resolution? Could we have prevented the conflicts raging in Africa by adhering to the rule of law and justice via the courts, or by mediation and conflict resolution? Where did Africa go wrong?

Mediator Career Forum

Discussion of careers in mediation. Learn how others have established successful practices and careers (and learn from their confessed mistakes). Share with others your own successes and not-so-successes over the course of your mediation career. Find a mentor. Be a mentor.
